More about Pia Dierickx

As a child I was probably bitten by the “photography bug” because the camera was always part of our family life. With my first journey to Africa almost 15 years ago, the passion for photography was rekindled. The beauty of the country together with its unspoiled, natural environment encouraged me to apply the camera to a recording of all the splendour and beauty I encountered.

It is my wish to reveal the treasures of our cherished planet through my photography and thereby create an awareness of them for others. I believe that every Nature photographer has a responsibility to share the spirit of these unfettered places and the animals that inhabit them. Animals and Nature do not sign contracts of undertaking with photographers. Nor do they tell one in advance what is going to happen next. Quite simply, as a photographer, one always has to be ready with the camera because most of the time there will be no warning and only one chance to record that unique picture.

Nature is the real base of peace in society and in that respect we are facing great challenges. Presently, the planet is spinning at the speed of Apps, deadlines, business, minerals and religion. Rhino horn is a status symbol, conservation is a business, and wilderness is a privilege.

We all spin so fast in our pursuit of the goal to survive that we forget who we are and what we are doing. Humanity is so disconnected from Nature that many believe that elephants lose their tusks every year to grow new ones, that rhino horn is has medicinal value and that lion claws offer Man a range of mystical powers.

If we are to ensure that true Nature continues to exist in this generation and also for those to come, it is vital to empower people to protect the unspoiled, natural environment through conservation.

The world faces a race against extinction, but I do have hope for the future.

Let us embrace the beauty of our Earth and believe in hope.

Let us cultivate a sense of confidence for the future.

Let us reconnect.
